Niihau Shell Lei. Authenticated. Sewn in the Pikake (Jasmine flower) lei style. 3 strands measuring 40 inches including the clasp. Momi Ke'oke'o Waha 'ula'ula, white "dove" shells with red lips and Momi Ke'oke'o, white "dove" shells. The clasp is a traditional Bumpy or Granulated cowry (Poleholeho 'apu'upu 'u), measuring 1 and 1/8 inch ocean-tossed patina and luster with slight sun bleaching lending a slight pink hue. Enhanced by 2 rare variegated sun dial Kuano'o on each side of the cowry. This cowry has a glistening shine to it, which is not common in adult cowry making it rare. Typically, only juvenile cowries exhibit this shine. Assessed characteristics: Good shell size, color, and placement with good structural form and alignment with appropriate fluidity and flow. Overall the luster is lacking in a standard desired state. Suggest cleaning as perhaps it would remove some of the "chalky" appearance. Wearing the lei also has been known to enhance luster. Note: Missing 1 Momi shell 1 inch from the sundial.
